Plascon launches its colour forecast for 2013

13 August 2012, Cape Town Anne Roselt, international colour expert and Plascons colour manager, is pleased to announce the much anticipated Plascon 2013 Colour Forecast. Endorsed by the International Colour Authority (ICA) and Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Roselt and her team have identified four colour palettes that explore the theme of balance and how we use colour to bring harmony to our lives when everything around us is constantly changing.

We are affected by what we read and hear in the news, the economy, technology and major events, explains Roselt. We are influenced by nature and the environment, pop culture, movies and fashion.

Having joined Plascon in 1991, Roselt has since been the driving force behind colour in South Africa. As one of the most experienced and reputable colour experts, Roselt has sat on the panel of the International Colour Authority (ICA), one of the oldest and most respected colour trend publications, for more than a decade. She initiated the colour forecast and Spaces magazine for Plascon and has been credited with broadening the colour horizons for people in this country. She writes a weekly post for Plascon Trends (www.plascontrends.co.za) and chooses the Colour of the Month for Plascon Spaces (www.plasconspaces.co.za).

Each forecast aims to capture a feeling of whats happening in society, looking to reflect peoples needs and desires. But with the rapidly moving and changing environment we live in, it is often hard to express these feelings when faced with the continuous discord and flurry of imagery.

In times of uncertainty like this we crave stability and balance in our lives and for that very reason the theme for the Plascon 2013 Colour Forecast is balance.

It explores how we use colour to bring harmony when everything around us is constantly changing. Whether it is the calm we find in whites and soft pastel colours, or the energy we seek in bright daring colours, we can always find balance in colour.

Taking many months of preparation, the forecast looks to the international markets and blends those trends with what we see happening locally. Roselt, together with Laurence Brick (creative consultant), Cathy OCleary (journalist and stylist), Jodi Robertson (ITI) and Themba Mngomezulu (founder Darkie clothing) filtered down the various trends and identified four colour themes that were leading directions for colour in 2013 Simplicity, Contrast, Pause and Dare, running from nostalgic lights to deep brights and sparkling metalliics.

As the name suggests, Simplicity is about stepping out of the chaos and into the calm. This palette is inspired by light white tones, which appeal to our desire for peace and serenity. Also included in this theme are metallics, which add a bit of sparkle and optimism and green, which brings a sense of nature.

The theme of Contrast aims to build a centred atmosphere within your home by using deep blues and greys together to create a contemplative and grounded feeling. This is given a sense of energy with high contrast brights like fuscia pink and bright yellow. The combination may be unexpected, but extremes of colour balance each other perfectly.

Pause asks you to stop and think, not just about the past, but about the now and what is happening around you and what you need. This collection of colours is light and feminine, but still connected and mature. The overall effect hints at nostalgia, while retaining a very welcome sense of the contemporary.

Lastly, Dare is perhaps the most vibrant theme of them all, but without being overwhelming and outrageous. The overall feeling of this palette is energetic without being manic. Often when times are hard we crave bright optimistic colours to lift our spirits and keep us motivated.

The 2013 Colour forecast is inspirational and a guide on what we have discovered in our travels, but there are no rules, says Roselt. Colour is something to be enjoyed and we hope everyone is able to find a palette that can help them find harmony and balance in their home.

The Plascon 2013 Colour Forecast was launched at Decorex Johannesburg on 08 August 2012 at the Plascon stand. Plascon together with Decorex brought Leatrice Eiseman to the event for a national series of Interior Design Dialogues in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban where she discussed the Plascon 2013 Colour Forecast.
